Same famous big eyes, but a face, hair and personality nobody else has.

What is a custom Blythe doll? She is a Blythe that an artist has changed by hand to give her a new face, new eyes, new hair or a whole new personality. Collectors also call her an OOAK doll, short for one of a kind, because no two are exactly alike.
If you are new to Blythe, the word “custom” can be confusing. This guide explains what artists actually change, how a custom doll differs from a stock or factory doll, and how to choose one you will love for years.
Every Blythe starts as a manufactured doll. A stock Blythe is one that is left exactly as she came from the maker. A custom Blythe is one that an artist has taken apart and reworked. Many custom dolls are built on factory Blythe-style dolls, and some are built on official Neo Blythe dolls, which are made in Japan under licence. Our explainer on what a factory Blythe doll is covers the difference.
| Stock doll | Custom doll | |
|---|---|---|
| Face | As made, usually shiny or plain matte | Carved, sanded and painted by hand |
| Eyes | Original eye chips | Often new chips, painted lids and lashes |
| Hair | Original hair | Often restyled or rerooted |
| Uniqueness | Many identical dolls | One of a kind |
| Price | Lower | Higher, because of the hours of handwork |
Artists carve and sand the faceplate to open the lips, add teeth, shape the nostrils, add dimples or change the jaw. Small changes here make a big difference to her expression.
Soft pastels, layered between coats of matte sealant, give her blush, eyeshadow, freckles and lip colour. This is where her mood really appears.
Most Blythe dolls have four pairs of eye chips that change when you pull the string. Custom artists often swap in new glossy, glittery or hand-painted chips, paint the eyelids and add new lashes.

Hair can be restyled, trimmed with bangs, curled or completely rerooted with new fibre and colours. Our guide on how to change Blythe doll hair shows how it is done.
Many custom dolls come on a jointed body that can pose and sit naturally, which makes a big difference in photos. Hands can be swapped too.
The finishing touches, from a hand-sewn dress to tiny earrings or a crown, complete her story.
Ask a collector “what is a custom Blythe doll?” and many will say: a doll that can look like anyone. Skin tones, hair textures and colours, freckles and face shapes can all be chosen, so more people can find a doll that feels like them.

Once you know the answer to “what is a custom Blythe doll?”, choosing one is the fun part.
Five questions to ask before you buy
1. Which face? Do you like a cute, pouty or smiling expression? A matte or shiny finish? 2. Which skin tone and hair? Choose what feels like you, or like the person she is for. 3. Which body? A jointed body poses better for photos. 4. Is the listing honest? A good seller tells you the base doll and exactly what was changed. 5. Do the photos show detail? Look for clear close-ups of the face, eyes and hair.
Signs of a well-made custom doll include clean, even carving, smooth sanding, soft blended makeup with no shine, eyes that sit straight and move smoothly, and hair that is firmly rooted.
Prices vary widely, because the handwork takes hours. Our guide to how much a Blythe doll costs explains what you get at each price level.
