How to use it, step by step

1. Plan the smile. With a soft pencil, lightly draw the mouth shape on the faceplate. Keep the smile gentle and even. The top front teeth look a touch bigger than the bottom ones.
2. Open the mouth. Carve the mouth opening slowly with a carving knife or a rotary tool. Hold the faceplate up to the light often so you do not carve too deep. Smooth the edges with fine sandpaper.
3. Shape the teeth. Roll a thin strip of white clay and bend it into a soft curve. Press small lines into it with a knife tip to mark each tooth. Keep the teeth small and tidy.
4. Shape the tongue. Knead the red clay until it is soft (a tiny bit of water helps), then shape a small tongue to sit behind the teeth and hide the inside of the head.
5. Cure the clay. Harden the clay by following the directions on the pack. Cure the pieces on their own tray, away from food, and never put the doll head in the oven. If your clay is an air-dry type, just let it dry fully at room temperature.
6. Seat the pieces. Once cool and hard, glue the teeth and then the tongue in place with a tacky craft glue, then nudge them into the right spot. Trim to fit with a craft knife if needed.
7. Seal and shine. Brush a little gloss varnish over the finished teeth and tongue for a fresh, wet-looking smile.

• Watch the clay while it cures. Too much heat can turn white teeth yellow.
